Felicity Jones rebel alliance perish in familiar territory!

According to a retrospective interview with StarWars.com, Edwards has struggled to absorb the fan appreciation for Rogue One, which has only grown since the conclusion of the sequel trilogy divided and disappointed the fanbase. The director says that everyday politeness means no one would ever tell him the movie was bad to his face, so he has a hard time seeing compliments as genuine. But, Edwards continues, people don’t seem to hate his film, which is a great relief. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story moved the overall Star Wars narrative away from Jedi and the Skywalker family to tell a proper war story. The film followed a rag-tag group of rebels on a mission to obtain the plans to the Death Star, directly leading into the events of A New Hope. This chain of events sees Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), and several others to go on a suicide mission to get the plans from her father (Mads Mikkelsen) and get them to the rebel alliance so the original trilogy heroes can bring it down. As a result, all of them perish in the film’s final act – culminating in a heartbreaking moment in which Jyn and Cassian hold each other on a beach while the Death Star wipes them out.

Given the intensity of the Star Wars fanbase, Edwards was right to be nervous, especially since Rogue One revisits a lot of familiar territory. Besides the direct plot connection to A New Hope, the film includes appearances from legendary villain Darth Vader and digital recreations of both Princess Leia and Grand Moff Tarkin, the latter of which necessitated resurrecting the likeness of the deceased Peter Cushing. Thankfully for Edwards, fans responded strongly to the movie, and it remains one of the most well-remembered projects of Disney’s Lucasfilm tenure. It has been five years since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story premiered in theaters. With that amount of hindsight, director Gareth Edwards has had some time to look back and reflect on his time working on the film. Speaking with StarWars.com, Edwards opened up and admitted that he still has no regrets about the untimely fates of the film’s heroes, because their deaths help the film better line up with the timeline of the original trilogy.

Indeed, the legacy of Rogue One is going to continue on Disney+ with the spinoff prequel series Andor premieres. Created by Tony Gilroy, one of the film’s co-writers, and starring Luna as his Rebel character, the show will begin five years prior to the suicide mission and explore the early development of the Rebellion. While an exact release date has yet to be announced, as with the rest of the streamer’s extensive Star Wars lineup, it has been confirmed for sometime next year. However, beyond the continuity aspects of the story, there’s also a matter of the impact that the deaths had, and how that made the characters more valuable to the overall Star Wars narrative. Elsewhere in his remarks, Edwards noted that the fact that these characters only get to exist in a brief moment in time within the Star Wars time is what makes them so precious to the overall narrative. Though it was obviously a gamble at the time, the gamble arguably paid off. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a massive hit at the time of its release, and some have even hailed it as one of the best post-Disney acquisition Star Wars movies. Moreover, due to how fluid the Star Wars timeline is, fans are already gearing up to go back to that corner of the Star Wars galaxy for Andor
